Latex binder

Also: latex binder, SB latex, styrene-butadiene latex

A polymer dispersion that binds coating pigments to each other and to the paper surface. Styrene-butadiene is the dominant chemistry.

Latex binder is the glue in paper coatings. It holds the pigment particles together and to the base paper. Styrene-butadiene (SB) latex dominates, with acrylic and polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) used for specific applications. Typical coating formulations are 10 to 20% binder by solids.

Binder level trades gloss and strength against porosity and printability. High-binder coatings are strong and smooth but print with less ink absorption; low-binder coatings absorb ink faster but can dust or pick in high-speed printing.
